The History of Banana Fiber

Discover the rich heritage and sustainable future of banana fiber textiles.

Ancient Roots

Banana fiber, also called "Musa fiber," comes from the pseudostem of the banana plant. Its use dates back over 750 years in Asia, especially Japan, Philippines, and India. In Japan, banana fiber (bash fu) was woven into kimonos and traditional textiles as early as the 13th century.

In India

In regions like Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, banana fiber was historically used for ropes, mats, and household textiles. Communities discovered that the discarded banana stem, usually thrown away after harvesting fruit, contained strong, durable fibers that could be repurposed.

Modern Revival

With the rise of sustainable fashion, banana fiber is making a comeback as a regenerable alternative to cotton and synthetics. Luxury designers and eco-conscious brands now use banana fiber for sarees, stoles, upholstery, handbags, and footwear.
